Color Photo - Week 1

My first choice for the week was Regine Peterson. This particular photograph is "Pigeon" taken in 2009 for her series To Think About Things. I liked the neutral color palette which draws your eyes to the center of the photo where the birds red feet pop out. I think once you are drawn into the photograph you notice the oddity of the bread there. While its perfectly normal for birds to eat bread the cookie cutter circle in the center makes the viewer question wether this photograph was posed or not. The second photographer I choose for this week is Elisa Larvego. This photograph is titled "Sculpture 3" taken in 2007 for Larvego's series Mobile Sculptures. These supposed sculptures are actually the carts of venders from Mexico. Larvego took the carts out of the context of their normal use creating abstract shapes and allowing the colors to shine. I think that that the rustic yet neutral background has a great deal to do with the success of these images. Had Larvego used a studio to photograph these I think that the carts would seem too miss placed. To see more of Larvego's work click here.

My final image for the week is by photographer Christine Callahan. The image is called "Tabernacle" taken in 2007 for her series 58 Empress Pines Drive. Callahan explores the memories of losing her family as a child through mundane places that recall memories for her. I choose this photo because I found that the idea of the steps and open door from this angle could metaphorically stand for the exit of her family. I also find the repeating of the carpet pattern extremely successful. To view more of Callahan's work click here.
