Abstraction

Dojoh . Frozen Flame

The first photograph is by a photographer who goes by the the name Dojoh. You can view his work here. I chose this photograph because I felt his use of point of view creates a surreal and abstract composition of the architecture he was photographing. His POV create strong geometric lines that pull your eye all the way through the image.

Ahmedpho . March 15, 2010 . Abstraction

The next photograph is by a photographer by the username Ahmedpho on Flickr. You can view his work here. I chose this photograph because I felt it was a good representation of current abstract photography. It has a strong geometric composition and a very mathematical feeling. It's not really my favorite but I do like it. My favorite thing about it is the colors. I like that pop of blue surrounded in grey, it draws the eye in and then the lines take you up.

Scott D. Butcher. February 17, 2010 . Untitled

The final photo is by the Photographer Scott D. Butcher. You can see his work here. I chose this photograph one because I like how vibrant the pink hue is and two because I felt it was a good Idea of my style of abstract photography. I find the simple close up macro of this image really interesting. The simplification of the form makes it abstract.

Point Of View

Untitled by Holly Henry . 2010. Flickr

The first image I choose is by Holly Henry of Flickr. You can view her photographs here. I chose this image because I felt the point of view was interesting. Her subject (herself) is taken at an angle that is dead on yet the camera is rather high above her. I think this creates an interesting composition with both the mirror and the frame. For me it creates a feeling like your almost not seeing the whole image, like you missing something almost.

Untitled by Mallory Varnum . 2010 . Flickr

The next photo I choose is by a Mallory Varnum. Her work can be seen here. I choose this photo for three reasons. One I love how much visible detail there is in the image. It takes what could have been a very flat photo and makes it almost palpable. Secondly I love the gentle lighting that is happening. However as this week is about POV I also choose it for that reason. The point of view of this image is eye level. To me the subject has a much more life like quality than the other two images for this week. To me eye level photographs create a more human, life like quality than others.

Untitled by Rosie Hardy . 2010 . Flickr

My final photo is by Rosie Hardy, also a Flickr find. Her work can be seen here. I choose this photo because I felt it contrasted the other two really well. While the first thing that jumps out at me is the colors I can honestly say that I feel the image wouldn't be as strong from another POV. The high downwards angle of the camera has created an isolation of the subject that the other two don't seem to have. You feel as if your looking at a frozen moment with a greater strength than the other two.

While each photograph has a different POV I think that each creates a very strong and different feeling than the next.

Light & Shadow

This weeks assignment was to observes how light and shadow can create different moods, atmospheres, or become the subject of a photograph.

Photograph by Gregory Crewsdon. Title Unknown.

This photograph was taken by Gregory Crewsdon. It can be found in his book Twilight which features several photographs where light creates a bit of an erie mood, or completely changes the idea of the image. I find this photograph appealing because of its use of bold lighting, its almost creepy idea, and its composition. The lighting in this image draws your eye to the subject as well as takes what would be a very flat image and gives it a whole new life. I think the lighting of the room is what makes the photograph so successful.

Photograph by Flor Garduno. "Torsos". Mexico, 1999

The next photograph is a photo by Flor Garduno. It is featured in her book Inner Light along with several other nudes and still life which feature a similar style of lighting. What draws me to this photograph is the light. It's bright light creates an almost palpable feeling of warmth when I look at it. It also seems to help create a feeling of weight between the two bodies where they meet and a deep shadow is created. While its simple composition seems almost obvious I think that it only helps contribute to the feeling of weight thats created by the shadows.

Photograph by Philip Lorca diCorcia. "Cuba Libre". W. March 2000

The final photograph was taken by Philip Lorca diCorcia. I found it in a book called Fashioning Fiction. What I find interesting about this photograph is it's simple composition but more than anything his use of light. The way he has use the light not only creates an interest within the simple composition but also changes the mood completely. The light now changes the image of a women alone at a bar from alone to complete isolation. It seems as if she is starting out at a world she can never get to.
